In two streches of the Itaúna stream, one in a gallery forest and the other in an herbaceous vegetation zone, litter matter input (sorted by leaves, ligneous and reproductive components) were measured during a year. In the gallery forest stretch, the direct input and lateral transport attained 713 g.m-2.year-1 and 421 g.m-1. year-1, respectively. In contrast, the herbaceous vegetation stretch showed a direct litter input and lateral transport of only 86 g.m-2.year-1 and 124 g.m-1. year-1, respectively. The empoverishment of riparian vegetation had a significant effect on the decrease of allochthonous input to stream mainly by direct input. Peaks of direct input into Itaúna stream occurred during late dry season and in the early wet season. They were... |

Comparative abundance and diversity of Dryininae (Hymenoptera, Dryinidae) in three savannah phytophysiognomies in southeastern Brazil, under three sampling methods. This study aimed to assess the abundance and diversity of Dryininae in riparian vegetation, Brazilian savannah, and savannah woodland vegetation at the Estação Ecológica de Jataí, in Luiz Antônio, State of São Paulo, Brazil, by using Moericke, Malaise, and light traps. The sampling was carried out from December 2006 to November 2009, and 371 specimens of Dryininae were caught, with the highest frequencies in spring and summer. Fourteen species of Dryinus Latreille, 1804 and one of Thaumatodryinus Perkins, 1905 were identified. The highest frequencies of Dryinus in the riparian vegetation... |

The benthic macroinvertebrate community structure is directly related to environmental factors such as water characteristics, habitat availability and substrate heterogeneity. This study had the purpose of characterizing the benthic macroinvertebrate community and compare its attributes in streams located inside (preserved area) and outside (altered area) the Iguaçu National Park, in the west of Parana, Brazil, in two season (dry and rainy). Three replicates per site were obtained through the Surber collector in four microhabitats (litter pool, litter riffle, substrate pool and substrate riffle). There was significant discrimination in the benthic fauna composition among the study areas (Wilks=0.091; F272,746= 2.249; P<0.0001). The taxa Corbiculidae,... |

The effect of riparian deforestation and stream impoundments on an odonate community was studied in áreas of surviving Atlantic forest in Viçosa and in Rio Doce State Park (PERD), Marliéria, Minas Gerais, Brazil. During 1997 16 species of Libellulidae, 4 Coenagrionidae, 2 Gomphidae, 2 Calopterygidae, 1 Megapodagrionidae, 1 Aeshnidae and 3 Protoneuridae were collected. In Viçosa, the association of sampled odonates with lotic or lentic systems, and in PERD for areas with or without riparian vegetation were compared. The results suggest that although overall odonate taxonomic richness is high in areas without riparian vegetation. Likely, because productivity increase of such areas and its invasion by lentic Odonata species. |

Abstract In Brazil, innumerable regions of native landcover have been removed and replaced by agricultural cultivation, especially of sugarcane. In this culture, the application of fertilizers containing metals has caused impacts on the water resources causing contamination of stream sediments and occasioning bioaccumulation of metals in aquatic invertebrates. In the year of 2006, an environmental diagnosis of metals in sediments of streams located near sugarcane cultivation areas and in streams located in preserved areas, was published. That study pointed to high concentrations of metals in stream sediments in agricultural areas. These streams have been monitored over the last 10 years conducting analyses of metals and monitoring possible changes in land... |

The watershed of the São Francisco River is a large complex of headwaters of the Paraguay River, the main river of the Pantanal Matogrossense. Considering that Fabaceae are pointed out as the main family in floristic composition of various Brazilian biomes, however in some regions of Brazil is still little known upon the taxa, particularly in the Northern part of the Central-West, this study aimed to present a list of taxa occurring in the sub-basin of the São Francisco River, municipality of Nova Marilândia, State of Mato Grosso. For the taxa we give information on habit, vegetation, data on geographic distribution, potential use, successional strategy and dispersal syndrome, to subsidize habitat restoration projects. We recorded a total of 44 taxa,... |

We investigated flower morphology, nectar features, and hummingbird visitation to Palicourea crocea (Rubiaceae), a common ornithophilous shrub found in the riparian forest understory in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil. Flowers are distylous and the style-stamen dimorphism is accompanied by other intermorph dimorphisms in corolla length, anther length, and stigma lobe length and form. We did not observe strict reciprocity in the positioning of stigma and anthers between floral morphs. Flowering occurred during the rainy season, October to December. Nectar standing crop per flowerwas relatively constant throughout the day, which apparently resulted in hummingbirds visiting the plant throughout the day. Energetic content of the nectar in each flower... |
